The Skeleton of Manufacturing—Mold Steel Classifications
Mold Steel Materials
Steel Determines Lifespan
The choice of mold steel directly dictates how many parts a mold can produce (mold life) and the surface finish of the product. It’s not about choosing the most expensive steel, but the most suitable one.
Common Steel Grades
■ P20 / 718 (Pre-hardened): Moderate hardness, easy to machine. Suitable for medium volume (approx. 300k shots) large appliance or automotive interior molds.
■ S136 (Stainless Steel): Corrosion resistant, excellent polishing properties. Suitable for high-gloss parts, transparent parts, or medical molds requiring a mirror finish.
■ H13 (Hot Work Steel): High heat resistance and toughness. After quenching (HRC 48-52), it serves long-life molds (1M+ shots) and high-temperature applications.
Our Commitment
Every block of steel entering Wanlong undergoes hardness testing. We never use inferior steel, knowing that quality steel is the primary guarantee of a quality mold.
